BACKGROUND
Niyog-niyogan is a climbing shrub with large rounded leaves and beautiful, fragrant, colorful flowers. It flowers are of various colors from light green, to peach, light pink, fuchsia, into purple and to red and orange. It also has tiny, round, edible fruits. This plant can grow as high as 15 to 20 feet. It can also be trimmed into a beautiful shade on many household backyards.
Niyog-niyogan is a tropical plant in South East Asian countries including Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia.
Niyog-niyogan became popular to many people in Philippines because of its benefits as an herbal remedy for many different diseases common to Filipinos. In Philippines, the condition of the people's health becomes more and more serious as the cost of hospitalization is also becoming more and more expensive and not affordable.
Niyog-niyogan is a very useful plant because of its benefits to health. It is a good remedy to many diseases such as the following:

1. DEWORMING. Dried seeds taken orally. Contraindication: Can cause stomachache if taken in big amount.
2. NEPHRITIS (Kidney Inflammation). Decoction. Boil enough leaves and make water as tea. Or dry the leaves and make them into tea.
3. Skin Disease. Poultice. Boiled and poultice.
4. Headache. Poultice on head.
5. Dysuria or pain while urinating. Decoction. Boil enough leaves and make water as tea. Or dry the leaves and make them into tea.
Recently, niyog-niyogan is believed to contain properties that can prevent the development of cancer but there is no published studies to support this idea yet. Its anti-oxidant properties are still to be proven by recent studies conducted in some big universities in Philippines.
